This column reflects upon the recent controversy surrounding Chicago Sun-Times theater critic Hedy Weiss and her review of Antoinette Nwandu’s play, “Pass Over” at the Steppenwolf Theatre, which resulted in a coalition of actors and playwrights branding Weiss a bigot and petitioning more than 70 local theaters to stop providing Weiss complimentary press tickets to their performances.At the time the controversy first arose in June, I had not yet read Weiss’ review nor had I seen the play.
