Settlement awarded to Urbana man after flag-burning arrest

A 22-year-old Urbana man received a $15,000 settlement Monday from the four police officers who arrested him last July for burning an American flag and posting pictures to Facebook.Rebecca Glenberg, an American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois attorney who represented Bryton Mellott, said she hopes this settlement sends a message to law enforcement agencies that the flag desecration law in Illinois is not enforceable.“The state should not have a statute on the books that clearly violates the First Amendment and that …
