State lawmakers are trying to undermine the system of checks and balances with proposals that would politicize judicial selection, unseat judges or allow legislatures to overturn court rulings, the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law contends. A report released Monday details 41 bills introduced in 15 states, including one in Illinois that would require trial judges to announce every day that anyone can file a complaint against them.
