Judge with Alzheimer’s involuntarily retired; can’t stay on bench to boost pension

The Illinois Courts Commission today announced they were retiring Cook County Circuit Judge Valarie E. Turner, who in August 2016 allowed a law clerk to rule in her stead and had since been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.The commission found that Turner’s argument she had effectively retired by taking temporary total disability benefits after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis was “contrary to any reasonable interpretation” of the law.Effective immediately, Turner is retired and drawing from her …
